First off we stayed with some family friends of Shaun's in Victoria. They treated us super well and entertained us for 2 days around Victoria.
David, Chris and Shaun - Victoria, Vancouver Island
From Victoria we did a big days' drive to Cape Scott for a hike. Located right on the northwestern tip of the Island this place gets alot of rain. We were lucky only getting wet on our last night.
Typical track conditions - very well maintained. It was originally a road used for farming in the area.
Once at the ocean the wildlife was spectacular. Heaps of starfish and muscles.
As the area is right on the coast it receives alot of rain. This is some of the typical rainforect we were walking through.
Nice lakes too
Nice lakes too
From Cape Scott we boarded the ferry from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert. The boat ride took 24 hrs through some fantastic fiords.
The weather in Prince Rupert was unusually fine for us. It rains in this town 220 days a year. So we made the most of the fine weather by going kayaking at the local play spot - The Butze tidal rapids. Chris
For dinner at Prince Rupert that night we were treated to an amazing sunset while we ate a gourmet feast of pork chops
Next on the hit list was to go "sea kayaking" in the fiords. We wanted to hire proper sea kayaks but they were prohibativly expensive, so we just took our river boats. It was an awsome day out.
Phase 1: Paddle up the fiord. This probably took a bit over an hour. Perfect conditions though. Seals were following us for a while as well.
Phase 2: portage up a small creek at the top of the fiord to a small lake and paddle across the lake watching out for the samoln jumping
Phase 3: Ditch the boats and walk up another creek at the top of the first lake to get to another lake.
We arrived at the top lake feeling pretty stoaked with ourselves. We were very content sitting on the lake edge, chatting and enjoying the serenity. Then Chris noticed somthing shining on the other side of the lake. Upon closer inspection using the zoom on our camera we discovered that the shining was coming from the roof of a cabin over there.
After more dicussion we decided that to get to the cabin there had to be a mode of transport - float plane or boat? Then we decided that surely they wouldn't carry a boat up here every time they visited. So...
Phase 4: Rummage through the bushes looking for boat
Phase 5: Paddle over to the cabin and check it out. We got into the cabin and found some fishing rods. What else were we to do but go fishing?
A spectacular day which finished with a trout curry for dinner. Awsome stuff.
Hygiene is important - Chris taking a bath
We then drove further east. The following 2 pictures are from a hike we did out of a town called Terrace.
And that brings us to the next issue - Jasper. See the next entry for that one.
